The Construction / Zoning official, and his staff, review all
applications and plans for compliance with the City of Cape May Land Use
Ordinances, the Uniform Construction Code-State of New Jersey (UCC), and the
BOCA National Building Code, which has been adopted by the City of Cape May.
This office is where all applications for construction permits, Planning and Zoning boards, and Historic Commission are submitted for review and approval. The staff assists the public in the procedures for filling out and submitting the forms for construction permits. Information is available through this office for property owners regarding flood zone map determinations. Information pertaining to building codes, City of Cape May ordinance and zoning codes, and zoning district maps are available in the office for the public and contractors.
The office staff also reviews all applications for fences, sheds, driveways, curb cuts, sidewalk repair, and walkways. A City of Cape May permit is required. Dumpster and yard sale permits are also available through this office.
The inspectors perform inspections for all construction permits issued from the start of the work through the final Certificate of Occupancy/Approval. Inspections must be called in or e-mailed at least twenty four hours prior to the requested inspection date. The inspection may be requested by the contractor or homeowner, according to the permit issued.
